A night of Cool Jazz

The Turner Centre Jazz Club presents a night of top International Jazz entertainment. The Club is saying goodbye to John Leigh Calder, before he returns to the Jazz Clubs of London.  Featured alongside John is saxophonist Walter Bianco. We also welcome back two of our favourite musicians, Matt Watson and Matt Hennessy for a night of cool Jazz.

John Leigh Calder – International Vocalist/Double Bass Player/Song writer and Recording Artist.  John performs dynamic sophisticated, smooth Jazz, alongside up tempo swinging funky grooves, highlighting his unique voice. Originating from Whangarei where he started his musical career with school friend Billy Taikoko, (Billy T James). John has worked throughout the UK and Europe with top UK Musicians including John Critchinson (Ronnie Scott’s Pianist) and Colin Wood (Acker Bilk’s pianist). He has been a regular guest at many London Jazz clubs along with numerous international festivals. He has also played in Australia alongside many of Sydney’s best known musicians such as Col Nolan, Errol Buddle and been vocalist with Galapagos Duck. John has composed music for feature films.  He has recorded four albums of his own and has worked as a session musician on many others.

Matt Watson – Pianist/organist/trumpet and Flugelhorn, regularly accompanies instrumental and vocal soloists and groups including the Bay of Islands Singers and performs with his own jazz trio “About Time.” Matt has been pianist with the Whangarei Theatre Company for shows such as Miss Saigon and Chicago. He is also actively involved in Whangarei Youth Music, Northland Sinfonia and the Basin City Big Band.

Walter Bianco – Saxophone, was born in Italy and spent his early musical career working around Europe and the Mediterranean, including entertaining on cruise ships. He came to New Zealand in the 1970s and has since toured NZ many times and has featured in many Auckland night clubs and bars. He has been a session musician on a variety of NZ recordings for over 30 years.

Matt Hennessy – Drums/Tablas/Percussion, has gigged and recorded with many well known New Zealand jazz and blues groups. Originally from USA, Matt has lived in New Zealand for more than 30 years. Some may remember Matt in the early days of the Bay of Islands Jazz Festival playing with Mike Nettmann, Kokomo, Roy Philips (‘The Peddlers’), Red Wilson, ‘Smokestack’, and ‘Viva Jazz’, who he brought to the TC Jazz Club last year. His roots are in St Louis – playing all genres from his most loved modern jazz to his first influences, the three Bs: Bach, Brubeck, and Beatles.  We welcome back Mr Rhythm.
