Behn String Quartet
Rising talent/fresh/new voices of the string quartet
Aroha Music Society presents Behn String Quartet in association with Chamber Music New Zealand.
The Behn Quartet is formed of players from England, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Wales. Lydia Abell is the violist, Ghislaine McMullin is currently playing on a c.1760 Gagliano cello, Alicia Berendse has a 1775 Thomas Carcassi violin, and Kate Oswin plays on a 1780 Gagliano violin – all kindly lent to them by the Royal Academy of Music as holders of the CAVATINA Chamber Music Fellowship there.
These young women have been earning rave reviews since they formed only two years ago and violinist, Christchurch-born Kate Oswin, brings the string quartet home to perform a programme of chamber music favourites. The folk song influences in Dvorak’s, ‘American’ quartet ensure it is one of the most loved in the repertoire, while the classical restraint of Ravel’s String Quartet in F major reveals devastating depths of emotion.
