The Bay of Islands Singers’ first concert of the year includes music of two very contrasting genres. The first half is of French music and the second of more popular works from the baroque period.

Gigout and Duruflé were both prominent organists in Paris in the 19th and 20th century respectively and also ‘minor’ composers. The concert begins with the celebratory choral arrangement of Gigout’s Grand Choeur Dialogue (the ‘dialogue’ being between choir and organ). This is followed by the reflective Requiem by Duruflé (1947), a piece often regarded as a contemporary version of the better known Requiem by Fauré.

The second half includes William Boyce’s joyous Symphony No 5, a duet for Soprano and Mezzo-Soprano attributed to Caccini and Vivaldi’s ever popular Gloria

Gigout – Grand Choeur Dialogue

Duruflé – Requiem

Boyce – Symphony No 5

Caccini – Ave Maria

Vivaldi – Gloria
