Be inspired by dance teacher/owner of DDf, Alannah Curtis – listen in to iWahine radio on Friday, 4th August.  Here’s a snippet from Alannah’s story:-

“I love to dance! My main goal is to give the opportunity of dance to our Far North community as when I grew up here in Kaikohe “I wanted to be a dancer” but there were no dance programs as such to explore these options in my childhood.

I started the first Hip Hop Business in Kaikohe 2008.  I was 18 years old, I had just had my first child and needed to provide for her. I was currently working for Analise Morris Hardcore Dance Company from the age of 14 years old. However, it wasn’t enough to support my wee little family and I did not want to be on a benefit. My mum said to me to start your own dance business, “I’ll give you 2 weeks”. So I did. I was well known in the area and my first business name was Alannah’s Hip Hop Dance Classes, which were held at The Kaikohe East School Hall, my full-time childhood Primary School.

I had many goals and dreams as a young child, and over the last 9 years I have managed to achieve most of all the goals I dreamed about in Kaikohe as a young child. I have managed to slowly build and get the tools I need to run my dance business as I started with nothing but a hall and my mum’s stereo. I have achieved this on my own with no financial support.”
