THE BASIN CITY BIG BAND
The Basin City Big Band is an 18 piece orchestra playing hits from the 40s’ 50s’ and 60s’ including tunes from Glen Miller, and Ella Fitzgerald, through to the more modern singers’ repertoires of Robbie Williams and Michael Buble. The band will swing with four vocalists entertaining you with songs you will love. You may want to watch and listen… or you can get up and dance!
The vocalists are; Chris Townshend, Cat Green, Tanya Maich and a special guest appearance by Makareta Umbers.
Chris Townshend – combines his powerful vocals and theatrical experience to give you a night of music that will keep you on your feet. A soloist for Whangarei’s Opera North, he has been vocally trained by the legendary Joan Kennaway. You may have seen him on stage as the lead male in Whangarei’s Mamma Mia and Miss Saigon. Be ready for a vast repertoire from artists including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Michael Buble, Robbie Williams, Dean Martin, Tom Jones and more.
Cat Green - After gaining a diploma in performing arts, Cat moved to NZ from the UK in 2005, and has been appearing on the stage in Whangarei ever since her first role in ‘Cabaret’ back in 2007. Performing in Mamma Mia as ‘Sophie’ earlier this year was Cat’s second major role in a musical to date, after playing Roxie Hart in Whangarei Theatre Company’s ‘Chicago’ in 2014, in which she received a NAPTA nomination for best actress in a leading role. Cat joined the Basin City Big Band as vocalist earlier this year and will be singing classics like ‘All That Jazz’ and ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’
Tanya Maich - Tanya first started singing with the Basin City Big Band when she was 18 years old. She loves singing and has been building up her repertoire and skill with Jazz standards. She loves being a part of a big band and enjoys the connection with the audience. Tanya will be performing a wide range of songs including Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Tisket a Tasket,’ and the Barbra Streisand hits ‘Evergreen’ and ‘The Way We Were.’
Makareta Umbers - Northland singer/songwriter/percussionist/actor/performing arts tutor, with a passion for mentoring talented youth. Margaret Umbers (Makareta) has performed throughout Australasia in film, television, theatre and a countless variety of music groups. Velvet-voiced and a consummate entertainer, she sings swing, bossa, blues, ballads, waiata and soul. She is also a self confessed ukulele addict. Her original jazz album ‘Love on a Swing’ was released in 2014. We experienced her polished, velvet voice at our Jazz club earlier this year with her own band ‘Blue Pearl.’
A delicious buffet dinner is included by Chef Colin Ashton of Food at Wharepuke.
