Whangarei Youth Orchestra

The Whangarei Youth Orchestra is currently the largest ensemble in Whangarei Youth Music with around 40 players from across Northland.

The Youth Orchestra rehearses every Friday night in school term time at the Old Library in Whangarei.

Most of the musicians in the orchestra are school age players however they are supported by Whangarei Youth Music committee members and parents who happen to play some of the harder-to-find orchestral instruments.

A primary focus of Whangarei Youth Music is to provide opportunities for young people to experience, enjoy and share the art of performing music in an ensemble. With several of our orchestra players in their final year of school, this year presented an opportunity to showcase the many talents of this unique group of young people before they depart for tertiary study.

The concert programme includes well-known works from the great masters Mozart and Brahms, along with Humperdinck’s Overture to the Opera Hansel & Gretel, and Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens featuring violinist Maia-Dean Martin.

We are delighted to be joined by soloists Daniel Morrison and Tania Priebs who will perform two beautiful duets from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute.
