Jan Stevenson
I am a full-time Abstract/Expressionist/Mixed Media Artist. I have been immersed in the Arts for most of my life, coming from a family of artists, and from a young age have always been curious to take the next creative step. I studied art at Highschool through to my senior year, in which I won a National High School Poster Competition. Since returning to Kerikeri 15 years ago I finally had the opportunity (after many years in a corporate environment) to embrace my art again and have been painting full-time for the past 12 years and exhibiting my works successfully for the past 8 years.
Over the years I have enjoyed Art Tuition from some very accomplished and talented tutors. I attended Mike Nettman’s very inspirational Advanced Abstract Art Course for 3 1/2years and spent 2 1/2 years enjoying tutoring/mentoring from well-known Artist Scott McFarlane. In 2016 I completed a Te Wananga o Aotearoa Certificate in Maori Art, with tutor renowned Maori Artist, Theresa Reihana and graduated June 2017.
I have been an active member of KOAST from its inception in 2014 and a member of the KOAST Committee in 2015.
I am drawn to Abstract/Expressionist/Mixed Media works because of the freedom of expression this allows. My work is contemporary and considered, with exploration of textures, shapes, mark making and colour. My artwork is constantly evolving and I love to experiment with different processes when creating. Once a process excites me, I will create a body of work where the concept and artwork of different pieces exhibit well alongside each other. Over the past years I have also enjoyed producing new pieces of sculptural wall art. I am constantly experimenting and exploring new and challenging ways of creating. I work mainly with acrylic paint, occasionally using oils and I enjoy exploring a wide range of mixed media techniques and products. Music is extremely important to me when creating and I become immersed in both the music and the process. My work is contemporary, often colourful, and occasionally controversial.
I have artworks in private collections in: Wellington, Auckland, Matakana, Kerikeri, Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany.
