Paintings by Susan and Alice Gatti

Susan & Alice, respectively wife & daughter of the late John Gatti, sculptor & painter.

Susan Gatti

Susan was born in the UK in 1927 and met John at Art School. They emigrated to NZ in 1951. The family moved up North in 1972, with 4 children, sailing boat & pony. They settled on 45 hectares above Ohaeawai to keep the pony, John taught at Northland College, ended up farming, carving & painting.

Susan studied for 6 years in the U.K. at Guilford Tech & Slade School in London. This was a good grounding.
“If I stay out of the studio too long I get very gloomy & wonder why. Working on a painting is like doing a puzzle, fun but frustrating. I treat every composition as an abstract, looking for patterns. Visual images are a language of their own, striving for a literary meaning can lead one astray.”

Alice Gatti

Alice was born Wellington in 1961. She worked as a theatre nurse in Wellington to pay for study at The Polytech, gaining a diploma in Textile design 1993. She travelled and worked overseas (theatre nursing) returning to Ohaeawai in 2003.

“As mother, wife, farmer, gardener…. studio time is often down the list of priorities. But I have an inherent need to make, create things. Art being one I enjoy. Most recently I have been working on a series of bird and landscape collage using magazines. I like the thought that I am recycling a material to depict something that cannot be recycled.”
